Our Story
Here at Maitland’s, we are immensely proud of our heritage. We are a fifth generation, family run furniture retail business and this has enabled us to establish strong foundations rooted in excellent customer service. We have worked hard across the years to create strong relationships with our customers, spanning the generations.
In September 2017, Bill Maitland- who dedicated 60 years of his working life to the Maitland’s family-run furniture store- handed the mantle to son John, next in line to continue the furniture empire. This marked the next phase in our company’s long-standing and impressive history. But where did the story begin?
The Maitland’s business was founded by Bill's father, William Maitland, back in 1900, known then as ‘The Little Wonder’. Initially operating as a general drapery store, the business then expanded into ladies and menswear. Incredibly, the store did not branch out into furniture until 1936! By the 1970s and 80s, the Maitland’s outlets were selling almost everything, including kitchens and bathrooms. Inevitably, there was a need for a certain amount of stream-lining and, in the 1990's, the fashion side of the business was retired and the focus turned to furniture, carpets and bedding. In 2010, the family made the bold decision to incorporate a restaurant into the store and we have not looked back since!
Our customers are still very much at the centre of all that we do in the 21st century, just as it was in 1900! We have plenty of new ideas and plans moving our business forwards, aware of the fact that today is an ever changing and increasingly interconnected world where our customers shop in increasingly varied ways. Something which we are more than ready to accommodate!
This level of experience has given us an insight into the diverse needs of our customers and so, at Maitland’s, we reflect that diversity in the broad selection of products we have to offer. You will find yourself able to browse all your favourite brands: Stressless, ROM, Amtico, Parker Knoll to name but a few! We are also pleased to be able to offer quality accessories, many of which are exclusive to our store. Topping all that off is our small, tight-knit family of staff ready to assist our valued customers.
